HOUSEMAKING 101

Hello, and welcome back to my blog! It has been quite a while since I last updated this site. You can always catch up with me and follow my daily activities through my Instagram account @kamilovesbooks. I mostly share the books I’m reading, the movies or series I’m watching, places I’ve visited, or current issues that resonate with me personally.

I feel truly blessed to be enjoying my early 30s as a full-time housewife. I am learning from scratch how to manage meal planning, laundry, cleaning, gardening, and even acting as a private tutor for my son. It takes a great deal of focus and commitment to stay on top of everything.

You might wonder: Do I have a helper? Does my husband help out?

I am quite lucky since my husband provided a nanny to assist with cooking, babysitting when we are busy, and various other domestic chores. As for the monthly bills, house maintenance, car repairs, and the school commute—those responsibilities belong to my husband. I handle what I can and focus on being a present and supportive companion.

Most of the time, once my main tasks are done, I return to my reading, watching shows, or playing video games. I also spend time studying modern parenting and learning how to manage a household professionally, things like cleaning schedules, replacing broken items, or even pest control. Yes, you read that right! I can handle cockroach overpopulation within a week. No need to be scared; since I graduated from vet school, I have the fundamental knowledge to deal with it!

To keep our lives vibrant, we plan weekend activities like hiking, swimming, or visiting bookstores, libraries, and cinemas. We also have a favorite cuisine we often seek out based on my husband’s heritage: Nasi Kerabu! It’s blue rice served with mixed vegetables and meats. For refreshment, we head to a tau fu fa shop for mouth-watering bebola ubi (sweet potato balls) with grass jelly and soy milk. It is definitely the best dessert ever!

We live in a double-story house in a dense neighborhood. It’s a lovely place to live, predominantly Malay and Muslim. There is a playground, a mosque, a football field, and 24-hour security. However, one thing that bothers me is the number of cars parked along the alleys. It makes the streets narrow and difficult to pass through, often because some households own multiple vehicles or their porches aren't large enough for their 4x4s.

Last but not least, the most interesting thing about our home is its location: we are right in front of my mother-in-law’s house! We live back-to-back, making it easy to have dinner together, watch movies, or play games. The kids never get bored since they have two houses to explore!

NB: Here I want to share some of books to keep my housemaking better than before, new things to learn from eligible resources!

1. The Pocket Butler's Guide to Good Housekeeping by Charles Mac Pherson
2. HELP! I'M A PARENT! by Rachael K. Tan
3. Raising A Sceen Smart Kid by Julianna Miner
4. The Self-Driven Child by William Stixrud
5. The Book You Wish Your Parents Had Read by Philipa Perry
