STYLE IN BAJU KURUNG

                The history of baju kurung is traditional attire of Melayu ethnic. Baju Kurung mean “enclose dress”, because of the appearance is closing almost all of body surface. Baju kurung divided into upper side clothes and skirt. Melayu ethnic spread around south east Asia including Indonesia (Sumatera Island), Malaysia, and Brunei Darussalam. In Indonesia people wearing baju kurung on special occasion like wedding ceremony or cultural event. Baju Kurung become national dress in Malaysia. Brunei Civil Cervant must wear baju kurung for work, and also female uniform for student at school.

                The Design originally was loose and long, it popularized by Sultan Abu Bakar Johor, in late 19^th century. It’s influenced by Islamic rule to close body surface that known as syariah law. The women also wear tudung or headscarf to close hair. But if you are not moeslem, sometimes people just wear the baju kurung without scarf.

                In Modern life baju kurung having development on design, pattern and materials. Nowadays, the style kind like more fit to body so make a body silhouette. Give a sexy impression, yet elegant. Sometimes, it combine with another style like kebaya, batik, cape, long dress, or indian dress (sari). The material have so many various kind like cotton, silk, jersey, lace, songket and many others. Some of people like simple style of baju kurung for daily activities like work, and more fancy style on certain occasion. We can find extravagant style of baju kurung for bride and groom, it’s look luxury, bright color and has many ornament like mix with laces, beads, pearls, and embroidery.

                All of Melayu Ethnic who celebrate Eid Al-Fitri will wear baju kurung as cultural and religious reason. Most of people prefer buy the material and made it at taylor. But now there’s so many shop sell ready wear baju kurung with unique and modern design. As my experiences, I prefer to buy ready wear because it’s hard to find a suitable material and create the design by myself. So it’s easier to choose from website or going to local shop then make it fit if the size too big.

For more accessories I suggest to put pin for kebaya style, and for the headscarf. Pump you confident with your favorite high heels and hand bag. That’s my suggestion for best appearance in feminine. Or wear flat shoes with sling bag for informal look.
